Periodontal Scaling & Root Planing

In cases of periodontitis, scaling and root planing are non-surgical treatment procedures meant to remove dental plaque, calculus (tartar), and other microbial toxins which cause inflammation to the gum tissues and surrounding bone.

Scaling and root planing are stand-alone treatments that are prescribed to alleviate oral bacteria and halt the progress of periodontal disease. The treatments are also used to protect the teeth in cases where the depth of the gum pockets may show a risk of periodontal disease.

Scaling is a procedure that often employs an ultrasonic scaling tool to remove tartar and plaque from the surface of the tooth crown and root.

Root Planing is a procedure that removes unwanted microorganisms, toxins and tartar and smoothes the root of the tooth to promote further healing.

At Premier Dental Care, these scaling and root planing treatments are only performed after Dr. Bakhtyari has made a thorough examination of the teeth and surrounding tissue. Dr. Bakhtyari may also take x-rays before a complete diagnosis is made or before beginning these procedures.

If you have any questions about periodontitis and associated procedures, please speak to Dr. Bakhtyari or one of our hygienists during your next consultation.
