Have you lost a tooth recently? If you ever lose or knock out one of your pearly whites, it’s crucial to stay calm and make sure that you see your dentist right away. There are a few simple steps you can take to avoid more damage and increase your chances of healing well. Keep reading to find out the five things you should do if you lose a tooth.

Step #1: Call Your Emergency Dentist

If your tooth gets knocked out, the initial step is to contact your emergency dentist. They’ll assess the situation and advise you on the best steps to take. It’s crucial to reach your dentist’s office within 30 to 60 minutes to increase the likelihood of saving the tooth. If the incident happens after regular hours, listen to their voicemail for guidance on what to do next.

Step #2: Find & Clean the Tooth

Afterward, search for your tooth. If you find it, rinse it gently with water. Avoid using a toothbrush, soap, toothpaste, or any harsh cleaners as they could harm the tooth further. Also, do not remove any tissue attached to it.

Step #3: Store the Tooth

Place the tooth in a clean container filled with milk or saliva to keep it moist. Alternatively, you can store it between your cheek and gums. Only attempt to reinsert it into the socket if advised by your dentist. Remember to bring the tooth with you to your emergency dental appointment.

Step #4: Clean Your Mouth

After the incident, ensure your mouth is clean. Brush gently, avoiding the affected area. Rinse with water to remove any remaining debris. If there are still pieces of the broken tooth in your mouth, use dental wax to cover any sharp edges. This will help prevent them from scratching your tongue, lips, or cheeks.

Step #5: Keep Your Smile Safe

Once you’ve cleaned your mouth gently, it’s crucial to protect your smile. If possible, avoid eating until after your emergency dental appointment. If you do eat, chew on the opposite side of your mouth from where the tooth was. This helps prevent debris from entering the socket. If you’re in discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain medication, apply a cold compress, or rinse gently with a saltwater solution.
