Having a tooth extraction is an exhausting process. Between the anesthesia and the procedure, when you return home its common to want to just relax. But what happens when you can’t get comfortable? Here’s how to get settled in after a tooth removal so you can get the rest you need to power your recovery.
Take Pain Medication
Whether your dentist has prescribed pain medication, or you are able to manage your discomfort with over-the-counter medicine, keeping on a regular schedule can help ease some of the pain associated with your tooth extraction. If your dose is scheduled to wear off during the night, set an alarm to wake you so you can stay on track, or try to sleep for as long as possible and start a new schedule when you take your next dose.
Adjust Your Environment
Make an ideal situation for sleeping by dimming the lights, closing the curtains, and playing some white noise. Avoid using any electronics, as these emit blue light that could keep you awake instead of sleepy!
Maintain Proper Positioning
For best healing, keep your head elevated and try to sleep on your side. When your head is high, it can help reduce swelling and assist in clotting; sleeping on your side can make sleeping with your head elevated a bit more comfortable.
Apply Ice
Keep the area of your jaw where your tooth was removed iced. This can help reduce swelling and numb the pain in the initial days following your procedure.
And A few Don’ts….
Here are a few things you definitely should not do following your tooth extraction:
- Do not smoke
- Don’t brush around your wound, as this could dislodge your clot
- Do not drink beverages with a straw
- Do not drink alcohol
Remember, the first few days after a tooth extraction are always the hardest, but thankfully your only requirement during this time is to rest. For best results, try these tips so you can speed up the healing process and get some much-needed self-care while you recover.
